Blockchain was wildly fashionable for a while, and the government didn’t want to miss out. UK Research and Innovation, a quango that distributes government funding, alone lists 287 projects. In turn, blockchain spawned “smart contracts”. Another lucrative seam opened up with “digital twins”.
Fad follows fad in the technology industry, and leaves no trace but a further dent in the national debt.
