The relatively smooth progress at TSMC's first chipmaking facility in Japan stands in stark contrast to its plant in Arizona, which will eventually churn out ultra-advanced 4-nm chips.
The Kumamoto project was announced in October 2021, construction began in 2022 and mass production is expected next year. Plans for the Arizona facility were unveiled in mid-2020, construction started the following year and yet mass production, which was originally slated to begin in 2024, has been pushed back to 2025.
