… Salvatore Babones, an assistant sociology professor at the University of Sydney, argues that the Western view of Modi is mostly formed by the tiny number of English-speaking opinion makers in India. On the whole, this cadre finds the prime minister distasteful, likens him to Donald Trump and accuses him of preaching anti-elitism while cosying up to billionaire industrialists. They are at odds with the majority of Indians who credit Modi with bringing a measure of political stability to a country in which continual horse trading and the balancing of interests has historically resulted in very little of substance getting done.
