Excellent Choice for 2014 Nobel Prize in Economics


France’s Jean Tirole has been awarded this year’s Nobel Prize in Economics. His contributions to Economics are immense. His textbooks alone have shaped the thinking of an entire generation of Ph.D. students in economics ((The Theory of Industrial Organization (1988), Fudenberg and Tirole’s Game Theory (1991); and, The Theory of Corporate Finance (2006)).

Did Japan Make a Mistake with its Sales Tax Hike?

The first stage of the sales tax hike (in April 2014, Japan's national sales tax was hiked from 5% to 8%) has clearly harmed near-term economic growth prospects. There are fears that the second stage of sales tax hike (projected to raise sales tax to 10% in October 2015) may be a bit too much:
