I Changed My Mind. The Fed Needs to Cut Rates Now.
Waiting until September unnecessarily increases the
risk of a recession.
Why the Fed Should Cut Rates Now—Not Wait Until
September
Accelerating inflation looks like a lesser risk than a
weakening labor market
The Fed Should Not Cut Interest Rates Yet
Investors are betting on interest-rate cuts by the US
Federal Reserve in September, and potentially even in late July. But the
outlook for inflation and the labor market in the United States does not
indicate that policymakers should begin lowering rates in the next two months.
My take from June:
Higher interest rates, please: The Fed must raise
its long-term target for a soft landing by VIVEKANAND JAYAKUMAR - 06/07/24
Although modest rate cuts in the coming months will
boost the odds of a soft landing, the Fed still needs to curtail financial
market exuberance and remain vigilant on the inflation front. The Fed therefore
needs to project a shallow easing cycle and signal a higher estimate for the
long-term neutral rate.
