Why Is America Such a Deadly Place?

According to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, there are 22 times as many gun-related homicides in the United States as in the countries of the European Union. Between 2019 and 2021, total U.S. gun deaths — including suicides and accidents — grew 23 percent, to 48,830 such deaths in 2021. Comprehensive data for Europe is hard to come by, but most estimates put the total number of gun deaths across the European Union at about 7,000 annually. And while only about 15 percent of annual European gun deaths are estimated to be homicides, in the United States, that figure just two years ago was 43 percent. In 2021, there were about 26,000 murders across the United States, according to The Economist, compared with 300 in Italy.
