Recent months have seen a dramatic shift in public attitudes toward education, with a notable growth in the number of Americans who say education is a first-tier issue for them, as well as in the number who say they trust Republicans over Democrats when it comes to schooling. Two phenomena in particular appear to have driven this change: the parties’ polarized handling of school responses to Covid-19, and their active roles in culture-war issues rooted in schools.
